Purpose and Philosophy

I'm Matthew and glad you're checking this page on Book Chat with You. I'm so happy you clicked this page. Thank you. 

After years of living in China, I can reflect to some of my most memorable times in China being when I shared stories with others. I hope to continue that with this podcast. I truly believe the highest form of appreciating literature is to discuss literature with others. To discuss literature together we can discover so much more from stories than from close readings that produce written or video essays. Most episodes aim to be conversations with you. 

I will be perfectly honest I don't read as much as one might think. I won't pretend to. I have to read something many times to make a video about it. I won't lecture you about some deep meaning from a text. The deep meaning from a text comes from our joint cooperation in discussing it. How can I lecture you when you'll see something I don't see? I have been doing this English thing for a long time. I could try to find those so-called deep meanings in everything, but that's useless. I should talk to get the conversation started, not to try to prove how smart I am. Furthermore, I care little about titles, awards or even degrees. Yes, that last one may seem like a contradiction but I cannot help that. I care about what you care about your titles, awards etc. What you value in your work makes it have value, but saying you have this thing so I should treasure you for it means nothing to me. We all matter as people and literature is capable of uniting people.
